Biography

Steven Strait was born on March 23, 1986, in New York City and raised in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan. The son of Jean and Richard Dyer Strait, he is of Italian and English ancestry. He attended Village Community School and later Xavier High School, supporting himself in part through modeling work for magazines and campaigns that included collaborations with photographers such as Bruce Weber and Herb Ritts. From the age of eleven he studied acting, eventually training at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and the Black Nexxus Acting Studio. After graduating high school he moved to California to pursue a professional career in front of the camera.

His first on-screen appearance came as a teenager in a guest role on the television series Third Watch. In 2005 he made his feature-film debut as the fire-wielding Warren Peace in the Disney superhero comedy Sky High, a role he landed on his very first film audition. That same year he starred as an aspiring musician in the independent drama Undiscovered. The following year he took the lead as Caleb Danvers in the supernatural thriller The Covenant, performing many of his own stunts. Larger-scale projects followed, including the prehistoric adventure 10,000 BC and the military drama Stop-Loss. He also appeared in the independent comedy-drama City Island and later took on television roles, notably as Stevie Evans in the period series Magic City.

Strait achieved sustained recognition with his portrayal of James Holden, the idealistic spaceship captain, in the science-fiction series The Expanse, which ran from 2015 to 2022 and allowed him to develop the character across multiple seasons while also serving as a producer. In addition to acting he has pursued music as a singer and songwriter, contributing tracks to film soundtracks and previously fronting a band. Married twice, he continues to work in both film and television, balancing leading and supporting roles with a focus on character-driven material.
