Biography

Sullivan Stapleton was born on June 14, 1977, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He has a younger sister, Jacinta Stapleton, who is also an actress, and a younger brother. At the age of eight he and his sister joined an acting and modelling agency after their aunt signed her own children. A director who saw his photograph invited him to appear in a short film and encouraged him to continue performing. He received formal training at Melbourne’s St. Martins Theatre and studied drama and theatre at Sandringham Secondary College. He obtained his actors’ union card at nine and began appearing in commercials by eleven. Between early jobs he worked as a model, cleaned animal cages, and served as a grip on film and television sets.

His first on-screen role came in the 1994 Australian television movie Baby Bath Massacre. He made his feature-film debut in River Street in 1996. Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s he built a steady career in Australian television, with recurring parts in Neighbours, Something in the Air, and especially as Justin Davies in The Secret Life of Us. He also appeared in films such as Darkness Falls, December Boys, and The Condemned. International recognition arrived with his portrayal of the volatile Craig Cody in the 2010 crime drama Animal Kingdom, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and earned him an Australian Film Institute nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Following that breakthrough he took leading roles in major projects, including the action series Strike Back as Sergeant Damien Scott and the historical epic 300: Rise of an Empire as the Greek commander Themistocles. He later starred as FBI agent Kurt Weller in the long-running American series Blindspot. Additional film credits include Gangster Squad, Kill Me Three Times, and Cut Snake. Known for intense, physically demanding performances, Stapleton has balanced Australian and international work while continuing to appear in both film and television into the 2020s.
