2012 (2009) is a science-fiction disaster film directed by Roland Emmerich. The story follows Jackson Curtis, a struggling writer and father who becomes caught in a global catastrophe caused by massive geological changes. Scientists discover that the Earth is experiencing unusual solar activity, causing the planet’s crust to become unstable. Governments secretly prepare for the destruction by constructing enormous ships that can protect a limited number of people. Jackson, who is divorced from his wife Kate, is spending time with their children, Noah and Lilly, when strange disasters begin occurring. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and massive floods rapidly destroy cities around the world. Realizing that the world is changing beyond control, Jackson desperately tries to keep his family safe.
As the disasters become more severe, Jackson and his family travel through dangerous situations in search of safety. They escape from collapsing buildings, exploding volcanoes, and enormous floods while trying to reach the secret ships. During their journey, they encounter other survivors, including Jackson’s former pilot friend and wealthy businessman Yuri Karpov. The group faces many difficulties because the destruction is happening faster than expected. Meanwhile, government leaders struggle with the moral consequences of deciding who will be allowed to survive. The film shows the destruction of famous landmarks and cities as the characters race against time. Jackson remains determined to protect his children and reunite with Kate, even when their chances of survival seem extremely small.
Eventually, Jackson and his family manage to reach the ships, but their survival is threatened when one of the vessels suffers a serious mechanical problem. Jackson risks his life to help save the ship and everyone aboard it. After the disaster finally settles, the survivors learn that the world has been dramatically changed, with much of the Earth covered by water. The remaining humans prepare to begin rebuilding civilization in a new environment. Jackson’s experience brings his family closer together and helps him understand what truly matters. 2012 combines spectacular disaster scenes with themes of survival, courage, family, and hope. Ultimately, the film presents a dramatic story about humanity facing an almost unimaginable catastrophe and finding the strength to survive and start again.
