Biography
Adam Sandler is an actor, comedian, writer, producer, and musician who became one of Hollywood’s comedy stars. He was born on September 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York City, to Judith and Stanley Sandler. When he was six, his family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire, where he grew up. As a teenager, Sandler discovered a talent for making people laugh and began performing stand-up comedy at age 17. He attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1988 with a degree in acting. His television appearances included The Cosby Show and the MTV game show Remote Control.
Sandler’s film career began with Going Overboard in 1989, in which he played Schecky Moskowitz. His career changed when Dennis Miller noticed his stand-up act and recommended him to Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels. Sandler joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in 1990 and became a cast member in 1991. His characters and comedy songs made him popular with viewers. After leaving the show in 1995, he starred in Billy Madison, followed by Happy Gilmore in 1996. Happy Gilmore is widely regarded as his breakout film because it established his distinctive comedy style and helped make him a major star.
Throughout his career, Sandler has starred in comedies including The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, Big Daddy, 50 First Dates, Click, Grown Ups, and Just Go with It. He demonstrated that he could handle serious dramatic roles, receiving critical praise for Punch-Drunk Love and acclaim for his performance in Uncut Gems. Beyond acting, Sandler founded Happy Madison Productions, which has produced films and television projects. He has continued performing music and stand-up comedy, including the Netflix special 100% Fresh. His career has lasted decades, and his combination of comedy, acting, writing, and producing has made him an influential figure in entertainment. In 2023, he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, recognising his contribution to comedy.
