Biography
Andrew Keegan is an American actor and producer who became widely recognized during the 1990s as a prominent teen actor. Born on January 29, 1979, in Los Angeles, California, he grew up in a family connected to the entertainment industry; his father, Larry Heying, worked as a voice-over actor, while his mother, Lana Ocampo, was a hairdresser from Colombia. Keegan began performing at a very young age, appearing in print advertisements and television commercials as a child. His early work eventually led to acting opportunities on television and in film. In 1993, he co-hosted the ABC Saturday-morning special Rhythm & Jam, and the following year he made his feature-film debut in Camp Nowhere (1994), playing Zack Dell.
Following Camp Nowhere, Keegan developed a steady television career, appearing in programs such as Thunder Alley, Step by Step, Moesha, Party of Five, and 7th Heaven. He also appeared briefly in the blockbuster Independence Day (1996). His most significant early television exposure came through recurring roles, including Reed Isley on Party of Five and Wilson West on 7th Heaven. These appearances helped establish him as a recognizable young actor and teen heartthrob. Keegan’s major breakthrough came with the 1999 teen romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, in which he played Joey Donner, an affluent and self-absorbed high-school student and aspiring model. The film, starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, became a lasting favorite and is widely regarded as Keegan’s breakout film.
After his breakthrough, Keegan continued working in both film and television, taking on a variety of roles that moved beyond his earlier teen-heartthrob image. He starred in The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy (2000), appeared in O (2001), and later worked on films including Perfect Opposites, Waiting for Dublin, Kill Speed, Living Among Us, and The Activated Man. In 2009, he also made his theatrical stage debut in the play He Asked For It. Keegan’s career has therefore spanned several decades, from childhood commercials and 1990s television to independent films, stage work, and more recent screen appearances.
