Biography

Andy Serkis is an English actor, director and author who became internationally recognized for his pioneering work in performance capture. He was born Andrew Clement G. Serkis on 20 April 1964 in Ruislip, London, England. His father, Clement Serkis, was a doctor of Armenian heritage, while his mother, Lylie, was a British special-education teacher. Serkis spent parts of his childhood between London and the Middle East because of his father’s work. He studied visual arts at Lancaster University, initially becoming involved in stage design before discovering a passion for acting. His nickname is “Gollum,” reflecting the character that became his most famous performance.

Serkis began his professional acting career in theatre before moving into television and film. His early television appearances included roles in British productions such as The New Statesman, The Bill, Streetwise and The Darling Buds of May. His feature-film debut came in Prince of Jutland (1994), in which he played Torsten. He subsequently appeared in films including The Near Room, Stella Does Tricks, Career Girls, Mojo, Loop, Among Giants and Topsy-Turvy. These early performances established him as a versatile character actor, capable of playing a wide variety of dramatic and unconventional roles.

Serkis’s breakthrough came when he was cast as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, beginning with The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. His performance combined acting, voice work and motion-capture techniques, helping demonstrate the dramatic possibilities of performance capture. He continued to explore the technique in King Kong (2005), playing the title character, and later portrayed Caesar in the Planet of the Apes reboot series. Other notable roles include Captain Haddock in The Adventures of Tintin, Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Ulysses Klaue in the Marvel films Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther. Serkis has also worked as a director, including Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
