He was born Benicio Monserrate Rafael del Toro Sánchez on February 19, 1967, in San Germán, Puerto Rico. He grew up in Puerto Rico before moving with his family to Pennsylvania as a teenager. Del Toro initially studied business at the University of California, San Diego, with plans to become a lawyer, following his parents, who were both lawyers. After discovering acting through a university drama course, he decided to pursue a career in performance and later studied at the Stella Adler Conservatory and Circle in the Square Theatre School. His documented nicknames include “Beno” and “Skinny Benny.”
Del Toro began his professional acting career with small television appearances during the late 1980s, including roles on Miami Vice and the miniseries Drug Wars: The Camarena Story. His film debut came in 1988, when he played Duke the Dog-Faced Boy in the comedy Big Top Pee-wee. The following year, he appeared as Dario, a villainous henchman, in the James Bond film Licence to Kill, becoming the youngest actor to portray a Bond villain at the time. He continued taking supporting roles throughout the early 1990s, appearing in films such as The Indian Runner, Christopher Columbus: The Discovery, Fearless, and China Moon. These performances gradually brought him greater attention within the film industry.
Del Toro’s breakout film was The Usual Suspects (1995), in which he played the eccentric criminal Fred Fenster. He followed the success with roles in The Funeral, Basquiat, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. His international reputation grew further with Traffic (2000), in which he played Mexican police officer Javier Rodríguez.
