Biography

Bruce Willis is an American actor who became one of Hollywood’s best-known stars through action, comedy, and drama films. He was born Walter Bruce Willis on March 19, 1955, in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany, where his father served in the U.S. military. His family moved to New Jersey when he was young, and he grew up in Carneys Point. Willis developed an interest in acting and studied drama at Montclair State University before leaving college and moving to New York City to pursue professional acting. Friends gave him the nickname “Bruno” during his youth. Before fame, he worked as a security guard and bartender while auditioning.

Willis began his professional acting career on stage and made his film debut in the 1980 crime drama The First Deadly Sin, in a small role alongside Frank Sinatra. He appeared in The Verdict and television programs before his major television opportunity. In 1985, Willis was cast as wisecracking private detective David Addison in Moonlighting, opposite Cybill Shepherd. The series made him widely recognized. His major film breakthrough came in 1988 with Die Hard, in which he played New York police officer John McClane. The movie became a major success and transformed Willis into an international action star.

Following Die Hard, Willis built a long and varied career. He starred in successful films such as Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense, Armageddon, The Fifth Element, Unbreakable, Sin City, Red, and Looper. He also continued working in comedy, appearing in films including Look Who’s Talking and The Whole Nine Yards. Willis became known for combining action with humor and a distinctive screen presence. In 2022, his family announced that he was retiring from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia; in 2023, they announced that his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia.
