Gerard Butler is a Scottish film actor and producer known for his work in action, drama, comedy, and romantic films. He was born Gerard James Butler on November 13, 1969, in Paisley, Scotland. He spent his early childhood in Montreal, Canada, before returning to Scotland with his mother, siblings. Butler studied law at the University of Glasgow. Although he was preparing for a career as a solicitor, he became interested in acting after meeting actor Steven Berkoff in London. This encounter encouraged Butler to pursue acting, leading him to leave the legal profession and begin performing on stage.

Butler made his feature-film debut in the historical drama Mrs. Brown in 1997, playing Archie, the younger brother of Billy Connolly’s character. He subsequently appeared in Tomorrow Never Dies, Tale of the Mummy, and the television miniseries Attila, in which he played Attila the Hun. His international recognition grew after he was cast as the title character in Dracula 2000. Butler continued gaining attention through films such as Reign of Fire, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, and Timeline. He also received praise for his performance as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera in 2004, demonstrating his ability to take on musical and dramatic roles.

Butler’s major breakthrough came with the historical action film 300 in 2006, in which he portrayed King Leonidas of Sparta. The film became a major international success and made Butler widely recognizable. He later starred in films including P.S. I Love You, RocknRolla, Gamer, The Ugly Truth, Law Abiding Citizen, Olympus Has Fallen, and its sequels. He also voiced Stoick the Vast in the How to Train Your Dragon films. Butler has continued working as both an actor and producer, appearing in action thrillers such as Greenland, Plane, Kandahar, and Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Throughout his career, he has become particularly associated with physically demanding roles, dramatic performances, and action-oriented characters.
