Biography

Julia Stiles is an American actress, producer, and director known for her work in romantic comedies, dramas, thrillers, and action films. She was born on March 28, 1981, in New York City and is the eldest of three children. Her mother, Judith Newcomb Stiles, was an artist, while her father, John O’Hara, was an elementary school teacher. Stiles became interested in acting at a young age and began performing professionally as a child. At age 11, she made her stage debut with the experimental Off-Broadway La MaMa Theatre. She later attended New York’s Professional Children’s School and began appearing in commercials before moving into film.

Stiles made her feature-film debut in the 1996 romantic drama I Love You, I Love You Not, appearing alongside Claire Danes. She followed this with a role in The Devil’s Own (1997), but her major breakthrough came with the television film Before Women Had Wings, for which she received significant attention for her dramatic performance. Her film career gained momentum with 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), in which she played Kat Stratford, a strong-willed teenager based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The film became a popular teen classic and established Stiles as one of the most recognizable young actresses of her generation.

After her success in 10 Things I Hate About You, Stiles took on a variety of challenging roles, including Ophelia in Hamlet (2000) and Desi in O (2001), a modern adaptation of Othello. She achieved further international recognition as Nicky Parsons in the Bourne film series, appearing opposite Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). She also starred in Save the Last Dance (2001), Mona Lisa Smile (2003), and The Prince & Me (2004). Later, she earned critical recognition for playing Lumen Pierce in the television series Dexter, receiving Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Stiles has continued working across film, television, theater, and directing, demonstrating versatility throughout her career.
