Biography
Kevin Spacey is an American actor, producer, director and screenwriter, widely recognised for his performances in film, television and theatre. He was born on 26 July 1959 in South Orange, New Jersey, and raised in Southern California after his family relocated during his childhood. His interest in acting developed during his school years, when he participated in theatrical productions and demonstrated a talent for impressions. After graduating from Chatsworth High School, he studied drama at the Juilliard School in New York City from 1979 to 1981. He subsequently pursued a professional acting career, beginning on stage before moving into film and television. His early theatrical experience helped him develop the distinctive screen presence and character-driven performances that would later define his career.
Spacey began his film career with a small role in the comedy-drama Heartburn (1986), followed by appearances in Working Girl (1988) and other productions. He gained wider recognition for his portrayal of Mel Profitt in the television series Wiseguy and attracted further attention through his performance in Glengarry Glen Ross (1992). His major breakthrough came with the crime thriller The Usual Suspects (1995), in which he played Roger “Verbal” Kint, earning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. That same year, he appeared in the psychological thriller Se7en, further strengthening his reputation as a versatile performer. He subsequently starred in acclaimed films such as L.A. Confidential (1997) and American Beauty (1999). His portrayal of Lester Burnham in American Beauty earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor, establishing him as one of Hollywood’s leading performers.
Beyond cinema, Spacey achieved considerable success in theatre, winning a Tony Award for his performance in Lost in Yonkers. He also served as artistic director of London’s Old Vic Theatre from 2004 to 2015. In 2013, he began playing politician Frank Underwood in the television drama House of Cards, earning widespread attention and award nominations. His later film appearances included Superman Returns (2006), Baby Driver (2017) and several independent productions. However, his career and public reputation were significantly affected by allegations of sexual misconduct that emerged in 2017, resulting in professional setbacks and legal proceedings. Spacey has denied wrongdoing, and he was acquitted of criminal sexual assault charges in a United Kingdom trial in 2023. His career remains associated with both acclaimed performances and substantial controversy.
