Biography
Leslie Jean Mann was born on March 26, 1972, in San Francisco, California, and was raised primarily in Newport Beach by her mother, Janet Ann Ayres. From an early age, Mann developed an interest in performing, and at seventeen she began appearing in television commercials. She later studied acting with Joanne Baron and trained in improvisational comedy with the Groundlings, an experience that helped shape the energetic, spontaneous style that would become a defining feature of her performances. Mann’s early work combined television and film, giving her opportunities to develop her craft while gradually building recognition in Hollywood.
Mann made her film debut with a small role in the 1991 comedy Virgin High. She continued working through the 1990s, appearing on television and taking supporting parts in movies before landing a major opportunity in The Cable Guy in 1996. She played Robin Harris, the girlfriend of Matthew Broderick’s character, and the film marked an important turning point in her career. During production, Mann met producer Judd Apatow, whom she married in 1997. She followed The Cable Guy with roles in She’s the One and George of the Jungle, where her performance as Ursula Stanhope showcased her comedic timing and helped establish her as a memorable presence in mainstream comedy.
Mann’s career gained even greater momentum in the 2000s, particularly through collaborations with Apatow. Her role in The 40-Year-Old Virgin in 2005 brought her wider attention, while Knocked Up in 2007 became one of her most recognized performances. She later reprised her character Debbie in This Is 40, which placed her at the center of the story and highlighted her ability to combine humor with warmth and emotional realism. Mann has since appeared in films including Funny People, 17 Again, The Other Woman, Vacation, Blockers, and The Bubble, while also contributing voice performances to animated projects. Known for her distinctive voice, expressive personality, and sharp comic instincts, she has built a lasting career as one of American cinema’s recognizable comedy performers.
