Biography
Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an American actress and singer who has built a successful career in film and television. She was born on November 28, 1984, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and was raised mainly in Sandy, Utah. She is the youngest of five children and developed an interest in performing at an early age. As a child, she studied ballet and attended a summer training programme at the Joffrey Ballet School in Chicago. She also sang in the International Children’s Choir and appeared in local theatre productions. Although she originally hoped to become a ballerina, she eventually turned to acting after realising that her height would make a professional ballet career difficult. She began appearing on television as a teenager and gained her first major role as Jessica Bennett on the soap opera Passions from 1999 to 2000.
Winstead gradually moved from television into feature films and became recognised for her performances in horror, action, comedy, and drama. Her early movies included The Ring Two, Checking Out, and Sky High. She gained wider attention after starring as Wendy Christensen in Final Destination 3 in 2006 and appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof in 2007. She also became internationally known for playing Lucy Gennero-McClane, the daughter of Bruce Willis’s character, in Live Free or Die Hard. One of her most memorable roles came in 2010 when she played Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. In 2012, she received critical praise for her performance as a woman struggling with alcoholism in the independent drama Smashed, earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead.
Throughout her career, Winstead has continued to take on a wide variety of roles in both film and television. She appeared in The Thing, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Fargo, Birds of Prey, and the television series Ahsoka, where she played Hera Syndulla. She has also worked as a singer and formed the music duo Got a Girl with producer Dan the Automator. Winstead has received several awards and nominations, including a Saturn Award for Best Actress for 10 Cloverfield Lane and an iHorror Award for Best Actress. She has also been nominated for awards recognising her performances in Smashed, Fargo, and other productions. Her versatility, musical talent, and dedication have made her a respected figure in the entertainment industry.
