Biography
Samuel L. Jackson was born on December 21, 1948, in Washington, D.C. Raised primarily by his mother and maternal grandparents in Chattanooga, Tennessee, after his parents separated, he developed an early interest in the arts. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he became involved in theater and graduated with a degree in drama. After college he moved to New York City and immersed himself in the stage scene, performing in productions such as A Soldier’s Play. His early film work began in the 1970s with small roles, including his feature debut in the independent film Together for Days, followed by appearances in projects directed by Spike Lee such as School Daze, Do the Right Thing, and Jungle Fever, the latter earning him special recognition at the Cannes Film Festival for his intense portrayal of a drug addict.
Jackson’s career reached a major turning point in 1994 with his electrifying performance as the philosophical hitman Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. The role brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a BAFTA Award, establishing him as a commanding screen presence. He went on to star in a wide range of successful films, including Die Hard with a Vengeance, A Time to Kill, Jackie Brown, Shaft, and the Star Wars prequel trilogy as Jedi Master Mace Windu. His deep, authoritative voice and distinctive style made him a frequent choice for both dramatic and action roles, and he became one of the most prolific and highest-grossing actors in film history.
Over the following decades Jackson continued to work at an extraordinary pace, appearing in franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nick Fury, as well as films like Unbreakable, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, and numerous independent and mainstream projects. Known for his professionalism, versatility, and larger-than-life persona, he has also produced films and remained active on stage. Married to actress LaTanya Richardson since 1980, with whom he has a daughter, Jackson stands as one of the most recognizable and enduring figures in contemporary American cinema, celebrated for bringing intensity, humor, and gravitas to an unmatched body of work.
