Biography
Sean Penn was born on August 17, 1960, in Santa Monica, California, to actor and director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan. He grew up in a show-business family alongside brothers Michael and Chris Penn and attended Santa Monica High School. From an early age he showed interest in film and performance, joining the Los Angeles Repertory Company and later moving to New York to pursue acting more seriously. After appearing in television and on stage, including a Broadway production, he made his feature film debut in 1981 as a military cadet in the drama Taps, sharing the screen with Tom Cruise and Timothy Hutton.
Penn’s breakthrough came the following year with his memorable portrayal of the laid-back, perpetually stoned surfer Jeff Spicoli in the comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The role showcased his comic timing and distinctive presence, quickly making him a recognizable talent. He followed it with intense dramatic performances in films such as Bad Boys, The Falcon and the Snowman, and At Close Range, establishing a reputation for intense, committed character work. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he continued to take on challenging roles in projects including Colors, Casualties of War, and Dead Man Walking, while also beginning to direct feature films himself.
In the 2000s Penn reached new heights of critical acclaim, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor twice—first for his portrayal of a grieving father in Mystic River and later for his transformative performance as Harvey Milk in the biopic Milk. He has remained a prolific and selective actor, appearing in films such as The Tree of Life, Gangster Squad, and The Irishman, while continuing to direct and pursue political and humanitarian interests. Known for his intensity, versatility, and often outspoken public persona, Penn has sustained a career spanning more than four decades as one of the most respected and formidable leading men of his generation.
