Biography

Shawn Hatosy was born on December 29, 1975, in Ijamsville, Frederick County, Maryland, to a loan officer mother and a graphic designer father. Of Hungarian and Irish ancestry, he grew up in a working-class household in the Loch Haven neighborhood and attended local schools, graduating from Linganore High School in 1994. From the age of ten he performed in community theater, school plays, and local public television productions. After a brief stint in community college he decided to pursue acting full time, landing early work in commercials and a guest role on the series Homicide: Life on the Street.

His first film appearance came in 1995 with a small part in Home for the Holidays. Supporting roles followed in independent features before he earned wider notice as the loyal student who stands up for his teacher in the comedy In and Out in 1997, a part widely regarded as his breakout. He then appeared as the high-school football player in The Faculty and took the leading role of a working-class teenager sent to a prep school in Outside Providence in 1999. Additional film credits from that period include Anywhere but Here, The Cooler, and Alpha Dog. Hatosy later shifted much of his focus to television, delivering memorable performances as Detective Sammy Bryant on Southland and as the intense Andrew “Pope” Cody on Animal Kingdom.

In recent years he has continued to build a reputation for complex dramatic work, including a recurring role as Dr. Jack Abbot on the medical series The Pitt, for which he received significant recognition. Married to Kelly Albanese since 2010, he is the father of three sons and has also directed occasional projects. Throughout a career spanning more than three decades, Hatosy has remained known for authentic, grounded portrayals that draw on his Maryland roots and early training in theater.
