Biography
Sterling Knight was born on March 5, 1989, in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and raised primarily in the Houston, Texas area. He has a younger sister named Samantha Scarlett and a younger brother named Spencer Shuga. At the age of ten he discovered a passion for performing and began appearing in local theater productions, including shows such as On Golden Pond, Lost in Yonkers, Bye Bye Birdie, and The Mad Adventures of Mr. Toad. These early stage experiences helped shape his interest in acting, singing, and dancing, and he eventually moved to Los Angeles as a teenager to pursue professional opportunities in the entertainment industry.
Knight’s first screen credits came in the mid-2000s with small roles in short films and guest appearances on television series including The Closer, Grey’s Anatomy, Out of Jimmy’s Head, and an episode of Hannah Montana. His feature film debut arrived in 2009 when he played Alex O’Donnell, the teenage son of the lead character, in the comedy 17 Again opposite Zac Efron and Matthew Perry. That same year he landed the role that brought him widespread recognition among young audiences: the self-absorbed teen idol Chad Dylan Cooper on the Disney Channel series Sonny with a Chance. He continued the character in the spin-off sketch comedy So Random! and further expanded his Disney profile by starring as the pop star Christopher Wilde in the original movie Starstruck in 2010.
After the Disney period, Knight took on a recurring role as Zander Carlson in the sitcom Melissa and Joey from 2013 to 2015. He also appeared in independent films such as Transit, Landmine Goes Click, Different Flowers, and The Man from Earth: Holocene. In addition to acting he has pursued music, singing and playing guitar, and at one point performed with a band. Knight has maintained a lower public profile in recent years while continuing to work selectively in film and television, balancing creative projects with personal interests that include travel, sports, and music.
