Biography

Susan May Pratt is an American actress known for her work in film and television, particularly during the late 1990s and 2000s. She was born on February 8, 1974, in Lansing, Michigan, and grew up in East Lansing. The daughter of Sally and William P. Pratt, she attended East Lansing High School before continuing her education at Simon’s Rock College of Bard and Parsons School of Design. Pratt initially pursued architecture and also worked as a model, including jobs in Italy and Japan. Her modeling career helped lead her toward acting when a casting opportunity introduced her to filmmakers. Although she did not get the role for which she originally auditioned, casting professionals recognized her potential and invited her to further auditions.

Pratt’s first credited film appearance came in Edward Burns’s independent drama No Looking Back (1998), in which she played Annie. She followed this with appearances in The Substitute 2: School’s Out and television programs including Law & Order and Third Watch. Her career changed significantly in 1999 when she was cast as Mandella, Kat Stratford’s Shakespeare-loving best friend, in the teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. The film, starring Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik, became a defining title of the era and brought Pratt recognition. She also appeared that year in Drive Me Crazy as Alicia DeGasario.

In 2000, Pratt took a role as ballet student Maureen Cummings in Center Stage, a drama about young dancers pursuing professional careers. She continued working in film and television, appearing in Searching for Paradise, Undermind, Open Water 2: Adrift, The Gift, and Act Naturally. Her television credits have included Charmed, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Ghost Whisperer, Private Practice, Mad Men, Masters of Sex, and Outcast.
