127 Hours (2010), directed by Danny Boyle and based on the true story of Aron Ralston, follows a young and adventurous mountaineer who travels alone to the remote canyons of Utah. Aron is confident, independent, and accustomed to exploring nature by himself. During one of his trips, he ventures into Bluejohn Canyon without telling anyone where he is going. While climbing through a narrow section of the canyon, a large rock suddenly becomes dislodged and traps his right arm against the canyon wall. Realising that nobody knows his exact location, Aron understands that he may be unable to escape. He initially remains calm and tries several methods to free himself, including pushing and lifting the rock. However, his efforts fail, leaving him stranded with very little food and water.
As the hours pass, Aron begins to struggle physically and emotionally. His water supply decreases, and he becomes increasingly weak and dehydrated. Alone in the canyon, he starts recording video messages for his family and friends using his camera. These recordings cause him to reflect on his life and the relationships he has neglected. Aron remembers important moments from his childhood, his family, and his former girlfriend, realising that his independent lifestyle has sometimes caused him to distance himself from people who care about him. Despite his fear and exhaustion, he refuses to give up. After being trapped for approximately 127 hours, Aron reaches a desperate conclusion: the only way to survive is to amputate his trapped arm.
With a small multitool, Aron painfully cuts through his arm and finally frees himself from the rock. Although severely injured, he gathers enough strength to leave the canyon. He climbs, walks, and eventually reaches a pool of water, where he is able to recover briefly before continuing his search for help. Aron is eventually rescued and taken to safety. The experience changes his perspective on life, teaching him the importance of human connection and the value of family and friendship. 127 Hours is ultimately a powerful story of survival, courage, determination, and the human instinct to live, showing how extreme circumstances can force a person to confront both physical limitations and personal regrets.
