27 Dresses (2008) is a romantic comedy directed by Anne Fletcher that follows Jane Nichols, a kind and dependable woman who has served as a bridesmaid 27 times. Jane is passionate about weddings and constantly puts other people’s happiness before her own. She secretly loves her boss, George, but is too nervous to tell him how she feels. Her carefully organised life changes when her younger sister, Tess, arrives in town and quickly attracts George’s attention. Jane is heartbroken when George and Tess become interested in each other, but she hides her feelings and continues supporting her sister. At the same time, Jane meets Kevin Doyle, a cynical newspaper writer who covers weddings and believes they have become overly commercial. Kevin is fascinated by Jane’s collection of bridesmaid dresses and begins writing about her unusual experiences.
As Jane spends more time with Kevin, their relationship develops from annoyance and disagreement into a genuine friendship and romance. Kevin encourages Jane to consider what she wants instead of always making sacrifices for others. Meanwhile, Jane becomes increasingly frustrated as Tess copies her interests and creates a false image of herself to impress George. When Jane discovers that Tess has been dishonest about her personality and past, she finally decides to confront her. Jane also realises that George does not truly understand or appreciate her, despite the years she has spent helping him. Her growing relationship with Kevin forces her to examine her feelings and the reasons she has avoided pursuing her own happiness. Eventually, Jane and Tess have a serious argument, bringing years of hidden resentment and misunderstandings into the open.
In the final part of the story, Jane begins to take control of her life and stops allowing other people’s expectations to determine her choices. She confronts her feelings for George and accepts that their relationship is not meant to be. Jane and Kevin admit that they love each other, but their relationship is briefly threatened when Jane discovers that Kevin has written an article about her bridesmaid experiences. After resolving their misunderstanding, they reunite and acknowledge their feelings. The film ends with Jane marrying Kevin in a joyful ceremony, surrounded by the many women whose weddings she once supported. 27 Dresses ultimately explores love, self-worth, friendship, and the importance of finding happiness by being true to yourself.
