99 Homes (2015) is a drama film directed by Ramin Bahrani that follows Dennis Nash, a construction worker living in Florida with his mother, Lynn, and young son, Connor. Their lives change when they are evicted from their home after Dennis falls behind on mortgage payments. The eviction is carried out by Rick Carver, a ruthless real estate broker who profits from foreclosed properties. Dennis is angry and humiliated because Carver forces his family onto the street. To support his family and regain their home, Dennis accepts work from Carver, despite knowing that his employer is responsible for the foreclosure.
Dennis soon discovers that Carver’s business involves exploiting homeowners who are struggling financially. Carver teaches Dennis how to manipulate foreclosure laws, pressure desperate families, and acquire properties cheaply. Although Dennis is uncomfortable with these practices, the money allows him to provide food and shelter for his family. He moves them into a better home and becomes successful in Carver’s organisation. However, his new position creates a moral conflict. Dennis begins treating other families in the same harsh manner that Carver once treated his own, causing him to question how far he is willing to go for security. His mother is troubled by the changes in his character, while Dennis becomes aware that his success depends on the suffering of others.
As Dennis becomes more deeply involved in Carver’s operation, he realises that wealth and power have not brought him happiness. His guilt becomes impossible to ignore when he encounters families facing the same devastation that he experienced. Dennis eventually decides to challenge Carver and protect people from being exploited, although it threatens his career and family. Their confrontation forces Dennis to choose between continuing a profitable life built on other people’s losses or taking responsibility for his actions. 99 Homes explores poverty, greed, housing inequality, morality, family, and redemption, showing how financial desperation can push ordinary people toward difficult choices.
