Biography

Kate Walsh was born on October 13, 1967, in San Jose, California, and spent parts of her childhood there and in Tucson, Arizona. Raised in a Catholic household with an Italian-American mother and an Irish-born father, she developed an early interest in performance. After attending the University of Arizona, where she became involved in regional theater, she moved to Chicago to study and work with the Piven Theatre Workshop and the Chicago Shakespeare Repertory. She later relocated to New York, joined a comedy troupe, and performed in Off-Broadway productions while supporting herself with various jobs, including modeling in Japan during her early years.

Walsh began her screen career in the mid-1990s with roles in independent films such as Normal Life and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Part II. She gained television experience through guest spots and recurring parts, including a memorable stint as Drew Carey’s girlfriend on The Drew Carey Show. Her major breakthrough arrived in 2005 when she was cast as Dr. Addison Montgomery, the sharp and sophisticated neurosurgeon, on the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. The character proved so popular that it led to the successful spin-off series Private Practice, which she headlined from 2007 to 2013. She has since returned to Grey’s Anatomy for guest appearances and continued working steadily in both television and film.

Beyond her signature medical-drama roles, Walsh has appeared in a variety of projects, including films such as The Family Man, Under the Tuscan Sun, Bewitched, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She has also taken on roles in series like 13 Reasons Why and Emily in Paris. Known for her poised screen presence and distinctive voice, she has balanced acting with entrepreneurial ventures and remains a recognizable figure in American television. Her career spans more than two decades of consistent work across drama, comedy, and independent cinema.
