Hiroyuki Sanada was born Hiroyuki Shimozawa on October 12, 1960, in Shinagawa, Tokyo, Japan. Discovered at a young age while playing with the son of an actor who lived in the same building, he began modeling for children’s magazines and joined the Himawari Theatre Group at five. He made his screen debut at that age in the 1966 film Game of Chance, appearing as the son of martial arts star Sonny Chiba. After a brief pause to focus on a more ordinary childhood, he resumed training in his early teens, studying Shorinji Kempo and later earning a black belt in Kyokushin karate. He joined Chiba’s Japan Action Club, where he developed skills in martial arts, stunts, horsemanship, and dance, becoming one of Chiba’s protégés. He later graduated with a degree in film science from Nihon University.
